Journey to the West is a television adaptation based on the classic novel of the same name by the renowned author Wu Cheng'en from China. The story is inspired by the real-life journey of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang during the Tang dynasty, who traveled to India in 629 AD at the age of 21 to obtain sacred texts. His journey lasted 17 years, spanning from 629 to 645, including a 6-year stay at the Nalanda Monastery, the center of Buddhist learning at the time. Xuanzang returned with 657 Buddhist scriptures, transported by 24 horses.
The legendary nature of his journey, highlighting human potential and supernatural feats, was creatively brought to life by Wu Cheng'en, who crafted this epic masterpiece. The 1986 television series of Journey to the West tells the story of the three disciples who accompany the monk Tang Seng on his journey to the West to retrieve sacred Buddhist scriptures: Sun Wukong (The Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy).
