The Wahoo Utilities solar project, in Wahoo, Neb., has become energized, with the proceeds of the contracted land lease set to fund the Wahoo Public Library.
Wahoo Utilities has leased 10 acres near its substation for the project, with payments directed to a trust benefiting the Wahoo Public Library, where the landowner is director.
A partnership between GenPro Energy Solutions, Sol Systems, Mesner Development and Wahoo Utilities, the project has 6,534 solar panels and a capacity of 2 MW. It began development in late 2020 and was approved for construction in 2022.
“The 2 MW Solar project started from our Board of Public Works’ interest, after seeing many throughout the state,” says Ryan Hurst, Wahoo Utilities’ general manager. “The main benefit of this project and partnership was affordable power very closely priced to what we buy our blended power from the Nebraska Public Power District. The 30-year contract on this Purchase Power Agreement was a way to hedge a portion of our power portfolio affordability for the next 30 years.”

Point Reyes Sweetheart Cattle Leases are IllegalDairy and Beef Ranches on Seashore Pay Far Below Fair Market Value
Washington, DC — U.S. taxpayers are losing millions of dollars due to leases for commercial dairy and beef ranches, along with associated buildings and residences, at California’s Point Reyes National Seashore set well below fair market value, according to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Both federal law and National Park Service (NPS) policy require that these leases recover fair market value, yet the leases at Point Reyes charge only a fraction of that amount.
Currently, 14 dairy and beef ranchers hold 21 leases that occupy approximately one-third of the entire Point Reyes National Seashore. The Seashore also manages ranches on 10,000 acres of the adjacent Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Together, these operations support 5,725 head of cattle, according to the Seashore’s 2021 decision to continue ranching for another 20 years.
These purely commercial operations serve no park purpose. While Point Reyes National Seashore draws well over 2 million visitors each year, barbed wire fences restrict park visitors from entering the leased dairy and ranch lands. Continuing ranching on the Seashore has been controversial and subject to litigation concerning its harm to natural resources, especially to native tule elk.
The grazing provisions of Point Reyes leases charge only $7/per animal unit (defined as a cow and a calf) per month. By contrast, the U.S. Department of Agriculture calculates the fair market value for an animal unit in California as $27.60/month per cow-calf for the latest year available.
In addition, their leases with NPS cover both land for grazing and, in many cases, multiple houses per ranch, as well as associated barns, sheds, and corrals. However, the operators do not pay anywhere near a fair market value leasing fee for residences and associated lands.
Point Reyes is in Marin County, which has some of the highest real estate values in the country. For example, one ranch has been leasing over 1,000 acres with five houses and grazing its 280 cattle on those lands for less than $2,000 per month. Moreover, these private businesses pay no property tax while generating substantial revenue.
“We estimate that these below market Point Reyes Seashore leases cost taxpayers around $3 million every year,” stated Pacific PEER Director Jeff Ruch, noting the annual lease revenue is approximately $800,000 short of covering the Seashore’s estimated costs for administering the leases. “Taxpayers should not be obligated to subsidize these private businesses.”
PEER today requested that the Office of Inspector General (IG) for the U.S. Department of Interior (NPS’ parent agency) audit the Point Reyes leases, as well as the similar leases in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, to determine whether they are set at fair market value.
“The case for taxpayer support for the National Park Service is undermined by sweetheart deals such as those that have long been in place at Point Reyes,” Ruch added, pointing out that the leases for all the Point Reyes ranches and dairies expire in September of this year. “These commercial operations should start paying their fair share to use national park lands.”

Qcells, SOLARCYCLE Partner on Solar Panel Recycling

Qcells has announced a partnership with SOLARCYCLE to recycle the company’s decommissioned, owned and installed solar panels in the U.S.
Recycled materials from Qcells’ panels, such as aluminum, silver, copper, silicon and low-iron glass, are set to be reused in the domestic supply chain for future manufacturing.
Qcells operates the largest silicon-based solar panel factory in the U.S., based in Dalton, Ga. One in three solar panels installed on rooftops in the country are made by Qcells, says the company.
Qcells will work with SOLARCYCLE to recycle its own installed panels and will also refer its customers to the company.SOLARCYCLE currently operates facilities in Odessa, Texas, and Mesa, Ariz., and says it has inked long-term partnerships with more than 40 solar energy companies.
“We are proud of the clean energy products we offer, but Qcells is committed to going further than that,” says Kelly Weger, Qcells’ director of sustainability. “We want our solar panels to not only help our customers cut costs and carbon, but also to be a part of building a more sustainable clean energy industry. Our partnership with SOLARCYCLE will give our panels a life after powering homes, businesses and communities, reducing waste and reusing pieces for all types of technology including solar.”

The depths of a chromite mine in Albania have turned out to be a massive natural hydrogen reservoir, an international scientific team recently discovered.
In a paper published in the journal Science, the researchers note that the mine showcases a remarkably high hydrogen outgassing rate of at least 200 tons per year. This is the highest recorded natural H2 flux to date.
One of its physical manifestations that gave away the presence of the gas is that it turns a draining pool inside a mine gallery into a 30-square-metre jacuzzi bubbling with almost pure H2 (84% by volume). This considerable natural outgassing raises the question of hydrogen’s origin and potential economic prospects.
In recent years natural or geologic hydrogen has gained widespread interest due to its potential as an extractable primary energy resource.
The researchers point out that although this flow is minimal compared to the global production of hydrogen by the petrochemical industry (100 million tons per year), in-situ observations and numerical simulations reveal the presence of a deep reservoir located in a well-identified fault zone. Mining operations have perforated this reservoir, resulting in hydrogen leakage at several well-localized points in the deepest galleries.
This discovery lays the foundations for new models of natural hydrogen exploration. In this sense, the Bulqizë chromium mine, by offering direct access to the subsurface, is a key scientific tool for studying the hydrogen system and understanding the conditions of formation and accumulation of this gas.
The study points out that ophiolitic massifs – mantle rocks from the oceanic crust obducted onto continents – are proving to be potential hosts for these high-quality hydrogen reservoirs. These large, widespread geological formations on earth have already been identified as hosting hyperalkaline sources where hydrogen bubbles.
However, the researchers note that it’s still too early to say whether natural hydrogen will take a significant place in the global energy mix or remain a niche curiosity. It is important to stress that geologic H2 is not renewable as the production time for H2 far exceeds the extraction time. These geological environments harbour a fragile deep biosphere that relies on H2 as an energy source.
“Therefore, we also deliver a message of caution to temper the passion, and even sometimes the ‘hydrogen fever,’ that will undoubtedly be stimulated by our discovery,” the scientists note. “While geologic hydrogen exploration warrants great scientific efforts, we must also be mindful of its potential environmental impact.”

Perseus Mining confident in winning OK for OreCorp takeover

Perseus Mining (ASX,TSX: PRU) is far from giving up on its intended acquisition of OreCorp(ASX: ORR), saying on Monday it was confident of receiving unconditional approval from the Tanzanian Fair Competition Commission (FCC) regarding its off-market takeover bid for the African gold developer.
In a first supplementary bidder’s statement issued Monday, Perseus said that the FCC had issued it with a notice of complete finding. This confirms the FCC’s acceptance of Perseus’ merger clearance request and paves the way for the watchdog to issue a resolution, expected before the end of the month.
As Perseus Mining does not currently own any operations in Tanzania, it does not expect any competition concerns or issues with its merger clearance request.
Perseus’ move complicates OreCorp’s scrip and cash deal with SilverCorp as its bid represents a 4% premium.
OreCorp’s independent expert report prepared by BDO earlier this month put a A$53.4 cents value on SilverCorp’s offer, compared to Perseus’ A$55 cents all-cash bid that equates to a A$258 million price tag. Perseus on Monday called into question the basis for BDO’s recommendation of SilverCorp’s proposal.
Both suitors have their eyes set on OreCorp’s Nyanzaga project, which would cost $474 million to build and it is set to produce 242,000 ounces of gold per year over its first decade.
The project, which could reach annual output of 295,000 gold ounces, is about 30 km northeast of Barrick Gold’s (TSX: ABX; NYSE: GOLD) Bulyanhulu mine. It is also 60 km east ofAngloGold Ashanti‘s (NYSE:AU) Geita gold mine.
Nyanzaga has an after-tax net present value of $618 million at a 5% discount rate and an internal rate of return of 25% based on a $1,750 per ounce gold price, according to a definitive feasibility study issued in August 2022.
The government of Tanzania holds a 16% non-dilutable free carried interest in the project.

Description:
The Sumatran tiger is the world’s smallest tiger subspecies* but still the largest predator in Indonesia. An adult female weighs about 198 pounds (90 kg), while an adult male can be more than 264 pounds (120 kg), with a shoulder height of about 23 inches (60 cm). Sumatran tigers have great day and night vision, very strong canine teeth, and impressive claws for holding and gripping moving prey. Their vision is six times better than humans’ at night, but hearing is their most acute sense, mainly used for hunting. They can detect high-pitched sounds produced by prey. Each individual Sumatran tiger has nearly 100 unique stripe patterns, like human fingerprints, which provide camouflage. Based on these stripes, scientists can identify individual tigers in the wild.

Where it’s found:
Endemic to the island of Sumatra, this predator still lives in 24 of 38 landscapes larger than 96 square miles (250 square km), the smallest area that can support a breeding unit.
IUCN Red List status:
Endangered at the species level of Panthera tigris. Assessment for all subspecies, including Sumatran tigers, has been discharged by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature awaiting further reassessments. Conflict between tigers and humans and illegal poaching and trafficking remain the most pressing threat to these big cats. Meanwhile rapid forest loss has left their habitat fragmented. Agriculture, the main driver of deforestation, contributed to an estimated loss of 27% of tropical forests across the island between 2000 and 2016. With demand for products such as palm oil, coffee and timber only increasing, this trend will continue.
Notable conservation programs or legal protections:
The Sumatran tiger is legally protected by the government of Indonesia through the Law No. 5 of 1990 regarding the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems. Key conservation priorities include:
- Strengthening the capacity of Sumatran tiger conservation through research – exploration, knowledge management, and training and education.
- Increasing the effectiveness of tiger landscape management in both major landscapes and marginal habitats.
- Strengthening the protection of tigers from habitat destruction, poaching, and conflict through effective patrols and law enforcement.
- Strengthening networks and partnerships for conservation that increase mutual benefits, supports, and added value to the community and stakeholders.
- Improving infrastructure and strengthening human-tiger conflict mitigation to save problem tigers and threatened populations.
- Increasing permeability and connectivity between habitat clusters in fragmented habitats.
My favorite experience:
I have been studying the Sumatran tiger using camera traps since 1998. Discovering tigers and other wildlife species, especially those with low detection probabilities, has always been my favorite experience. Together with the San Diego Zoo, where I’m a research fellow, I also learned many interesting new things related to technology in wildlife conservation, including the use of GPS collars, thermal drones, and new analytical techniques to strengthen the management of the Sumatran tigers and other key wildlife. As a senior manager, I’ve also had an opportunity to build and enhance the capacity of young people to become a new generation in Sumatran tiger and wildlife conservation.
What else do we need to understand or do to protect this species?
We need studies on potential connectivity among Sumatran tiger landscapes, with an emphasis on the roles of marginal habitats; nature-based solutions to strengthen active involvement of forest-edge communities in Sumatran tiger and key wildlife conservation; and technologies to enhance the capacity of forest rangers to prevent and detect illegal hunting on the tiger and principal prey.
