On the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, the festivities begins by watching the new moon-- this signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan. On this day, people thank Allah for blessing them and giving them the strength to observe the Ramadan fast throughout the month. Muslims on this day offer their prayers to Allah, called "Salat al-Eid", and seek forgiveness from Him for any shortcomings during Ramadan. Many Muslims, who have the financial means to do so, also donate to the less-priviledged on this auspicious day-- this is called Zakat al-Fitr. This not only blesses and purifies the person who fasted during Ramadan but it also helps the less-priviledged people in the society to celebrate this festival.
